Elizabeth Cowan-1Elizabeth Cowen M.F.A.

English Instructor

Originally from Pennsylvania, Elizabeth Cowan received her M.F.A. from the University of Iowa, where she began her teaching career. She has since taught college writing courses at a variety of institutions: public and private, four years and two, rural and urban. In 2008, she joined the Laney College English faculty, and she began teaching the APASS English curriculum in 2012. A big proponent of learning communities, Elizabeth has, in addition to her work with APASS, taught in specialized programs for students who did not complete high school, for first-generation college students, and for professional dancers. She has worked in curriculum development, writing center administration, and teacher training, but finds the most rewarding aspects of her work take place in the classroom, in dialogue with students.

ESL Instructor

Amy was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, where she studied Psychology, Anthropology, Interior Design, and classical Western and Indian music. She lived in Japan for 2 years teaching English to junior high school students and learning Japanese language, judo, and taiko. As well as teaching ESL, Amy has also designed and managed museum exhibitions in Honolulu and San Francisco, coordinated educational tours to Asia, and delivered lectures about Japanese culture on small ships. In 2012 Amy received her Master’s in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), and now teaches ESL at UC Berkeley Extension as well as Laney College. She is thrilled to be part of the APASS team, and says that her Filipino in-laws have prepared her well for the API experience.
