Turnitin.com quickly earned a reputation as an effective means of authenticating student writing. This feature cannot be overlooked as it eliminates the tedious process of Google searches and other time-consuming ways of establishing authorship. This is wonderfully effective and consistently accurate. I always tell my students that I’m not the best goalie in the game, but nobody gets one by turnitin.
Although turnitin’s plagiarism detection is the feature the site is most known for, there are other, even more noteworthy features. Turnitin offers an excellent online grading platform, and in fact, hosts the entire grade book for each class online. No more calculations. No more ballpark estimates. Specifically, this saves time when it comes to grading and commenting on assignments. As instructors, we’re now able to give focused, personalized comments in either written of voice format for each student in less time. This also allows each student immediate access to comments, assignment grades, and overall course grades at any time. I’ve found this eliminates much confusing when it comes to how students are doing in the course. I can honestly say it’s been a long since I’ve been asked, “What’s my grade?”
