Laboratory

Scheduled experiments and report sheets are posted here. You are expected to familiarize yourself with the experiment prior to entering the laboratory doors. Reward yourself by boning up on the experiment ahead of time.

Weeks of 16 and 23 November. Experiment 24, Finding the pH of Solutions, is scheduled for Wednesday, the 18th. Experiment 25, Titration of Vinegar, is scheduled for Monday, the 23rd. The titration experiment is REQUIRED so if you are unable to complete it next Monday, you will have to do it Wednesday after the third midterm exam. And for your convenience, the Group Exercise on Concentration, which we did on Monday the 16th, and which is due Monday the 23rd, is posted here.

Week of 9 November. Finish up Expt 21 if needed. The worksheet is posted here for your convenience. If you have already turned your results in, no further action is necessary. Monday’s regular experiment is Experiment 22 – Concentration fo Solutions. The key to the gas law problem set is posted here. Remember, no class on Wednesday.

Week of 2 November. Monday is a group exercise working gas law problems. On Wednesday we will conduct Experiment 21, Solubility and Molecular Structure.

Week of 12 October. Monday: Expt 7: Specific Heat of a Metal. Wednesday: Experiment 6 – Heats of Combustion and Fusion. We will do the first part on the heat of combustion of candle wax.

Week of 5 October. Monday’s lab is Expt 13: Decomposition of NaHCO3, followed by Wednesday’s lab, Expt. 11: Empirical Formula of an Oxide of Magnesium. Expt 13 will ask you to determine which of two possible reaction pathways actually occurs. Expt 11 will challenge you to find the empirical formula of the oxide of magnesium formed by burning magnesium metal in air. (Of course, most of you already know what the “correct” answer is!).

Week of 28 September. On Monday under the supervision of substitute instructor Bill Trego, we follow with Experiment 10, Single Replacement Reactions. The worksheet is posted here.

Week of 21 September. Monday’s experiment is Expt 9: Double Displacement Reactions. We will make the actual observations and then finish up the required equations on Wednesday. The completed worksheet will be due Wednesday, September 30th.

Week of 14 September. For Monday, Experiment #2 – Unknown liquid. Please download and bring to Monday’s class. For Wednesday, a group exercise involving drawing Lewis structures.

Week of 7 September. Monday is the Labor Day holiday. The Wednesday lab will involve a group exercise involving the three schemes of nomenclature presented in lecture.

Reference: Significant Figures and Measurement.

Alert: We will look at line emission spectra on Wednesday, 2 September.

Week of 31 August. Volume Measurement Lab. Line Emission Spectra. The first is its own report sheet. We will perform it on Monday. The report sheet for line emission — to be performed on Wednesday — will be available shortly. The workshop exercise on nomenclature will be postponed until Wednesday, 9 September.

Week of 24 August: Volume Measurement

Expt 1 – Metric meaurments and density of an unknown solid. Please note that we do not use old-fashioned centigram balances anymore. Our balances are top=loading with digital readout. The instructor will demonstrate use and care of these balances.

IMPORTANT: Please keep the balance and balance areas neat and tidy.

Experiment 1 report sheet for your convenience.
