TSS  Support Services’ Values

We believe that education holds the possibility for personal, communal, and societal change. Therefore, TRIO SSS strives to be a transformative educational community for Laney students which is defined by our program values:

We value Community. We believe that our communities such as family, neighborhoods, and the city of Oakland have taught us to be resilient, savvy, and resourceful—all of which we can draw upon to be successful in education.

We value Diversity. We believe that our experiences with race, class, gender, sexuality, ability, immigration experience, and age give us a unique outlook on life. We embrace the diversity of our students because it enriches our community and challenges us to look beyond ourselves.

We value Rigor. We believe that rigorous learning experiences–  ones that are active, deep, and engaging–-  maximize student success.

We value Social Justice. We believe that education should help students become critically aware of oppression and cultivate the skills to transform our society into one that is equitable.

Our staff believe that:

 The student is…
… the most important person on this campus.
Without students, there would be no need for this institution.
… not a cold enrollment statistic but a flesh and blood human being with feelings
and emotions
like our own
… not someone to be tolerated so that we can do our thing.

They are our thing.
… not dependent on us.
Rather, we are dependent on them.
… not an interruption of our work, but the purpose for it.
We are not doing them a favor by serving them.
They are doing us a favor by giving us the opportunity to do so.
