Basic English

Introduction to basic English in every day life activities. Integrated skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Basics of language structure, grammar, vocabulary, computer literacy, classroom culture and study skills.

Level 1 – About me: Simple questions and answers about you. Personal information, completing forms. Your neighborhood, shopping, likes, dislikes, the American classroom.

Level 2 – Jobs: Learn work vocabulary, create a resume, search for jobs online, practice filling out job applications, learn interview skills, connect to Career Education programs on campus.

Level 3 – Academic Life: More American classroom language, reading college documents, filling out college forms, talking with teachers, registering for classes, create a Student Education Plan.

Level 4 – Memories: U.S. History, cultural information, important events, adjusting to life in the U.S.

Certificate of Competency

This certificate prepares you for the academic rigor of credit courses by integrating English language instruction with organizational tools for student success. This certificate’s emphasis on organizational life skills will prepare non-native speaking students for vocational programs and job advancement.

To complete the certificate students must complete the four courses in the series: ESOL 541A Level 1, ESOL 541B Level 2, ESOL 541C Level 3, ESOL 541D Level 4.

Basic English classes are FREE. There is no residence requirement. Classes start in January, March, June, August and October. We have classes in person at the college and online.
