Lunar New Year, is a festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the lunar calendar. The national holiday begins on the first of the Lunar Calendar and lasts until the 15th of the first month. Chinese New Year 2019 officially begins on February 5th, 2019, and ends on Lantern Festival, February 19th, 2019.

Lunar New Year is associated with several myths and customs. The festival was traditionally a time to honor deities as well as ancestors. Nowadays, it is to celebrate a year of hard work; to have a good rest; to relax with family, and to wish for a prosperous new year. It is one of the longest public holidays in China, where most are off work for seven consecutive days.

“No work; no school; no excuse. It is a time to get together and feel the warmth of family bonds.”

Lunar New Year customs and traditions

Within Asia, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the New Year vary widely, and the evening preceding Lunar New Year’s Day is frequently regarded as an occasion for families to gather for the annual reunion dinner. It is also traditional for every family to thoroughly clean their house, in order to sweep away any ill-fortune and to make way for incoming good luck. Another custom is the decoration of windows and doors with red paper-cuts and couplets. Popular themes among these paper-cuts and couplets include that of good fortune or happiness, wealth, and longevity. Other activities include lighting firecrackers and giving money in red paper envelopes.
