On January 15, 2015, Laney College held an event focusing on the assessment of Institutional Learning Outcome 1 – Communication. Data was presented from the classes that assessed writing assignments using the common rubric. A panel of instructors from a variety of disciplines discussed the strengths and problem areas they noticed in student writing, and the discussion eventually included the attendees of the session as well. In the final phase of the event, the panel and the audience brainstormed ideas for solutions and proposed college-wide initiatives to help Laney students write better. There will be follow-up meetings during the spring 2015 semester to devise an action plan and (hopefully) to start to implement the action plan to improve student writing college wide.
