Laney Biology Modifications for Online Learning

At Laney, we care about your health along with the health of our faculty and staff. Therefore Laney College, as well as the other three Peralta Colleges, will be offering classes this summer and fall. However due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and recent shelter-in-place restrictions in effect in the surrounding Bay Area counties, we will be offering mostly online instruction, but will still have limited face-to-face instruction for laboratory classes. For the Biology & Chemistry Departments, that means some modifications of our courses in terms of lecture/labs schedules. We are also working together to ensure students who are taking classes in both areas are supported.

Our Summer 2020 schedule of classes all courses will be delivered 100% online. For Fall 2020, our courses will be following a hybrid format – Lectures for each class will be 100% online and the Laboratory portion for each class will be a combination of on-line and face-to-face instruction.  See the current Summer and Fall 2020 schedule in Passport

Check out the Laney Student Guide for What to Expect which contains general information about online courses. Laney also has Online Student Services. We also encourage you to take some time in the Peralta Student Resources – the Modules view gives you a good overview of what’s there. This website includes some great Tips for Success for Online Learning.

Here is some tentative information by class:

Biology 1A

Lecture:  This portion of your course will be “self-paced” with set due dates for completing review of videos before the related lab experiment

Lab: This portion of the course will be online or some will require you to come in-person. You will be separated into groups and will come into lab on certain dates. For those dates, there will be pre-lab material that you’ll need to complete beforehand which includes watching the lecture videos ahead of time.
