Laney Football Team Advances to State Championship

(OAKLAND, CA) Laney College’s football team has advanced to the California Community Colleges Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championship. This is the first time that the Eagles will play in the title game.

On Saturday night, Nov. 24, at Laney Stadium, the Eagles beat Fresno City College in the Northern California Regional Championship game. The final score was 24-7.

“I’m proud of the scholar-athletes of the Laney College Football Team and all of our outstanding coaches and program staff,” said Laney President Dr. Tammeil Y. Gilkerson. “The CCCAA 2018 NorCal Championship is a testament to the Eagles’ spirit that has the courage to soar above any circumstances.”

“I could not be prouder of this group of young men and coaches who have overcome so much adversity and challenges every day to reach this truly awesome achievement,” said Laney College Athletics Director John Beam. “This group of young men has been working since January for a year to reach this pinnacle of success for Laney College. They could not have done this without the tremendous support from the administration, faculty, staff and our student and family community who have believed in us and supported us.”

The Eagles will face the winners of the SoCal Regional Championship game, the Ventura College Pirates, for the CCCAA State Championship slated for Saturday, Dec. 8, at 1 p.m. at Hughes Stadium at the Sacramento City College campus.
