Laney Eagles Win State Football Title
(OAKLAND, CA) Sat., Dec. 8, 2018. Congratulations to the Laney Football team for their win on Saturday against the Ventura College Pirates! The Eagles won their first ever California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Football Championship, meaning Laney has the #1 football team of all community colleges in California.
Saturday’s game had a nail-bitting ending despite Laney’s lead during the 1st and 2nd quarters when the team enjoyed a 23-0 advantage after the first 10 minutes of the game. The Ventura Pirates, however, began to pick up the pace by putting 17 points on the scoreboard just before the end of the half.
By the end of the 4th quarter, the Pirates had began to chip away at Laney’s gains, trailing only by 5 points with a score of 40-35. Finally, with one minute left on the clock and the Pirates in possession of the ball, the Eagles had to stop the Ventura team from scoring. Fans watched nervously from the bleachers as the Eagles blocked every effort from the opposing team to score a touchdown. The Eagle’s defensive line kept up the pressure and was too powerful for the Pirates. Laney won the exciting game, 40-35.
“I was so excited and proud for my players and alumni on Saturday. Winning a state championship is just so unbelievable,” said Athletics Director John Beam. “This championship shows that hard work and dedication pay off. This achievement lets world know Laney works for its students.”
Congratulations to Coach John Beam, his staff, and all the amazing players.
