Laney Named 2020 Equity Champion of Higher Education!

Hello Laney Community,

We are excited to share with you that the Campaign for College Opportunity has recognized Laney College as a 2020 Equity Champion of Higher Education for its exemplary work in awarding Associate Degrees for Transfer to Black students!

The CCO will be honoring Laney College on Thursday, November 19th, 2020 from 10:30 am-12:00 pm in a virtual celebration. We will be joined by the Honorable California Secretary of State Alex Padilla and the Honorable Assemblymember Marc Berman.

Laney College is one of the first to win this award based on the California Community College Chancellor’s Office’s new Equity Index.

The Equity Index identifies campuses that are awarding ADTs to Latinx and/or Black students relative to the number of transfer-seeking Black and/or Latinx students enrolled.

“The Equity Index tells us when campuses are acting with intentionality to ensure Black and/or Latinx students who have a transfer goal actually earn an ADT. Across all California Community Colleges, your campus made the greatest gains in conferring ADTs to degree or transfer seeking Black students between the 2016-17 and 2018-19 school years. This is a tremendous achievement and the real work of equity,” says the CCO President, Michele Siqueiros.

Laney’s new permanent President, Rudy Besikof, expresses his gratitude in response to the recognition bestowed by the CCO.

“It is an honor to be recognized by the Career for College Opportunity as an Equity Champion for Higher Education. Associate Degrees for Transfer have become an important guarantee toward Student Success, and it is great to see that more African American students are earning this award as they work toward their Bachelor’s Degree or other educational goals,” says President Besikof.

While this is a big win for Laney College, it was made possible by our faculty members, administrators and classified professionals. Their late nights, early mornings, diligence, and passion make the difference in the lives of so many students and will continue to do so.
