Oakland, Calif. (July 25, 2019) – Oakland Roots will call Laney College’s historic stadium
home for the 2019 season.
Laney’s history dates back to 1927 when it was known as Central Trade School at 12th and Jefferson. The campus was formally renamed Joseph C. Laney Trade and Technical Institute in 1953, and experienced a rebirth when moving into the Peralta Community College District (PCCD) in 1964. Today, Laney is the largest of the four PCCD campuses, serving approximately 16,000 students annually on 60 acres in downtown Oakland.
The old Laney stadium was known as Frank Youell Field, which was home to the Raiders from 1962-65. That facility was demolished in 1969, but Laney built a new stadium. The venue is located conveniently off of I-880 and within blocks of the Lake Merritt BART Station. Laney boasts a strong academic and athletic tradition, which includes a No. 1 national ranking in football in 2018.
Among the notable Laney alumni are prominent local athletes and professionals, including former U.S. Congressman and Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums, NFL running back C.J. Anderson, U.S. track and field Olympian James Robinson, and famous jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders.
Roots will install a modular turf system over the Laney football field for all home games. This feature will add a soccer-specific look to the playing surface.
In addition to naming Laney as their home venue, Roots will train at the College of Alameda, which is also a member of the Peralta Community College District. The club also introduced Bladium Sports & Fitness Club Alameda as a clubhouse and secondary training facility on May 7.
