Information for Spring 2021

Syllabus: Syllabus Chem 30B Spring 2021

Dear Chem 30B students,

Hello! I’m glad you’ve decided to take this class! I wanted to let you know some things about this class so you can plan and get your materials.

Our class times will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 pm to 4 pm. Lectures, lab lectures, quizzes, and exams will be done during class times, so plan to be available to attend class on Zoom during these hours every week. The first day of class is Tuesday Jan 26.

Lectures will be live and will be done via Zoom. I will send you the Zoom link via Canvas. Labs will be a mixture of virtual simulations, videos, and in-person labs.

The in-person experiments will only be on Tuesdays at reduced capacity. We can only have half the students in the lab at any one time, so we’ll probably have half the students do the experiment one week and the other half on the following week. Make sure that you are available to come to the Laney College campus to do labs on any Tuesday afternoon from 1:00-3:50 pm.

For the lab simulations and the exams, you’ll need to have a desktop or laptop computer with a microphone and webcam. (Just using a phone or tablet will not work for these.)

You’ll probably also need a printer to print the exams and quizzes.

You’ll need a scanning app for your phone or a scanner to scan and upload quizzes, tests, homework, lab reports, and other assignments to Canvas.

Required items:

  • desktop or laptop computer with a microphone and webcam
  • printer
  • scanner or scanning app on your phone
  • textbook: Fundamentals of General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, 8th edition, McMurry, ISBN 9780134015187. (Alternatively, you could use the 7th edition of this same textbook, and it will be much cheaper.)

Please don’t hesitate to email me if you have any questions about the class. I am here for you!

Looking forward to meeting you,

Cheli Fossum
