The Electricity and Electronics Technology (E/ET) Department is an educational center providing Technical Education to the students to enter the demanding job markets. The reputation of the department as a quality educational provider that is responsive to students’ and industries’ needs, establishes the department as a regional model for delivering technical education. Student learning and academic success is the department’s highest priority.
Access to the State of California Certification (licensing) of Electricians is available at Laney College (State Site 172) through the state recognized Electrical Trainee program including all state-required courses (eleven in total) CA CTP (California Advanced Lighting Controls Training Program) courses such as AT-T (Acceptance Test Technicians) are taught and certified by CALCTP.
Electrical & Electronics Technology (E/ET)
A fundamental knowledge of electricity and electronics are part of what drives all technology of the 21st century. In particular, anyone desiring careers in telecommunications, electronics product development (including computers and micro-processor driven equipment), Bio-Science Technologies (including anyone using medical equipment), Electrical & Electronics Technology (E/ET) programs are designed to provide a knowledge-base and practical skills necessary for students to succeed in many careers. Additionally, Laney College E/ET Department is “State Approved” for Electrician Trainee, “ET”Program # 172. State of California requires that all electricians to be licensed by the State, and this has been a long and ongoing goal of the department to get recognition by the State as a Trainee Site. In 2012 this program was successfully launched.
Construction, manufacturing, engineering and transportation must consider one or more of these classes. These courses are necessary for anyone involved with facility or plant maintenance, Homeowners and consumers will find many of the courses useful to aid them in selection of consumer products and effecting general household repairs.

E/ET 800 Fee Based– Electrical & Electronics Department offers training in Advanced Lighting Controls including the following California Advanced Lighting Controls Training Program (CALCTP) courses:

2. A minimum enrollment of 10 participants is required for the courses to get started; If it is necessary for the college to cancel the course due to minimum enrollment not being met, a full refund will be granted.
50 -Hour CALCTP Technical Installer Course – Designed for general electricians that wish to expand their knowledge of advanced lighting controls. This intensive course offering includes both lecture and hand-on lab components. Course also serves as a pre-requisite for general electricians that wish to enter into CALCTP-AT Technician Certification training. This course concludes with a final examination. Course Fee: $675
10- Hour Systems Course – Pre-requisite requirement for entry into CALCTP-AT Technician Certification training for all applicants that meet credential and work experience requirements. Refer to CALCTP AT-Technician Certification eligibility requirements detailed below. This class concludes with a final examination. Course Fee: $400
16- Hour CALCTP Acceptance Test Technician (CALCTP-AT Technician)Certification Course – This course covers required training mandated by the CEC in order to achieve AT-Technician certification. Participants must complete all required pre-requisites and have an approved CALCTP AT-Technician application for class entry. Refer to entry requirements listed below. This course concludes with a final examination. Course Fee: $600
6- Hour CALCTP Acceptance Test Employer (AT-Employer) Certification Course –Designed for C-10, engineering, architectural, and commissioning firms that wish to conduct Acceptance Testing. State certified acceptance testing can only be performed by an approved AT-Technician employed by a certified AT-Employer. Course content covers acceptance test procedures for both indoor and outdoor lighting, compliance documentation and the roles and responsibilities of acceptance test employers and technicians. For mid-to senior-level employees. No pre-requisite required. This class concludes with a final examination. Course Fee: $350
Effective July 1, 2014, the California Energy Commission adopted changes to the California building Efficiency Standards (Title 24, Parts 1 and 6) that require lighting controls and devices to be certified as properly installed and operational, prior to issuance of occupancy permits.
The following requirements have been set by the CEC for AT-Technician Certification eligibility:
- Three years of verified professional experience in lighting controls and electrical systems. Refer to CALCTP AT-Technician application for further details.
- Candidates must meet one of the following approved credentials: Electrical Contractor (named on active license); State Certified General Electrician; engineer; architect; or commissioning agent (with certification from approved body)
- Candidates must complete the following pre-requisites to ensure they have the required knowledge to be successful in the program:
- Complete 10 hours of required online modules (EE101, EE102 Part 1, EE103 and EE201), available through the Lighting Control Association web site. Proof of completion must be provided to the instructor prior to starting the Systems Course (10 hour) or Technical Course (50 hour)
- For all approved credentials – Complete and pass the CALCTP Systems Course (10 hour course) pre-requisite training
- For General Electricians only that wish to complete a more robust pre-requisite that includes advanced lighting control installation instruction – Compete and pass the CALCTP Technical Course (50 hour)
- Submit a completed AT-Technician Certification application to CALCTP
How to get certified?
- Step 1- Complete and submit the Acceptance Test application to CALCTP. Applications (both AT-Employer and AT-Technician) are available on the CALCTP web site at www.calctp.org, submit completed application to info@calctp.org
- Step 2- Receive Admission Slip from CALCTP. Required for entry into both the AT-Technician and AT-Employer training classes along with a form of ID
- Step 3- Contact Laney College, E/ET Department (Fhashemi@peralta.edu) regarding training dates/times and applicable fees. Registration Form
