Exp. 20- Acid Base Titration:  Standardization of a KOH solution and Determination of the Molarity of an Acid Solution

  • Pre-lab Sheet: revised 10/5/2018 Exp. 20 pre-lab
  • Instructions: revised 10/7/2018 Exp. 20 with vinegar
  • Calculation help:
    • Edited, Calculations:Part 1: Calculate the molarity of the standard KHP solution.Part 2: Calculate the volume of base used for each trial, the moles of base for each titration trial using the standard molarity from Part 1, and the molarity of the KOH solution. Calculate the average, and the % difference<1.5% for the molarity of the KOH.

Part 3: To get the results, you will need to Calculate the mass of vinegar used for each trial, the volume of base used for each trial, the moles of base for each titration trial using the average molarity from Part 2, the moles of acetic acid in vinegar, the mass of acetic acid in vinegar.  Use the mass of the solution and the mass of acetic acid in vinegar to calculate the mass percentage of acetic acid in vinegar for each trial.  Calculate the molarity of acetic acid for each trial using the volume of vinegar used and the moles of acetic acid; Calculate the average molarity of the vinegar solution, calculate the average % by mass of acetic acid. Calculate the % difference<1.5% using the mass percentage.  Calculate the % error using the data from the bottle (5%, white vinegar).
