Cultivating LGBTQ+ Inclusive Campus Communities

with Ronit Matabuena-Lev, M.A., Sexuality Heath Educator, Founder, Bird and Bee Education

Description: Join Ronit for a one-hour keynote address to explore what sexual and gender diversity mean and how the experiences of LGBTQ+ students and professionals impact their engagement and success in higher learning environments.  A one-hour workshop will follow to consider what colleges can and are doing to foster more inclusive, equitable, and affirming campus communities.

Description: Where do students’ passions align with our offerings? Laney’s Areas of Interest are the newest way we are communicating and promoting the work we do at the college to our students. In this open office hour, come and learn about our Guided Pathways efforts and meet with Area of Interest co-coordinators.

Description: Come learn from our excellent ROC team about how and why ROC started, what ROC’s model is, what to do if a student tells you that they were formerly incarcerated, and have the opportunity to ask any questions you might have!

1-1:50pm  Understanding DSPS/SAS accommodations in an Online Environment (Nate Failing)

Description: This workshop will help faculty and staff understand the resources Canvas has to offer in working with students with accommodations.  The workshop will also cover websites that could be helpful, accommodations that faculty and staff should be aware of, and how to work with students in a trauma-sensitive manner.

1-1:50pm    The Open Road to boost courses with open educational resources (YiPing Wang)

Description: We will go over basic open educational resources (OER) and you will be guided on where to find teaching materials (open textbooks, workbooks, public domain materials, etc.) and what homework systems are available.  And you also have time to roll your sleeves up and start looking for materials or create your materials in a supportive, guided environment.

2-3:50pm  Course Design Excellence: Best Practices Using the Online Education Initiative Rubric

Description: The Laney College Distance Education team will review several of the OEI Rubric criteria to help faculty improve their online courses in Canvas.  This workshop will cover Regular, Effective Substantive Contact, grading rubrics and scoring for assessment activities, using proper instruction in the course design to ensure learners can work with content in meaningful ways and how to improve the accessibility of your course.

2-2:50pm   New Resources for Assessment of Institutional Learning Outcomes (Rebecca Bailey, Heather Sisneros)

Description: Last semester, we rolled out a new way of assessing ILOs that allows continuous data collection for all institutional outcomes. Faculty asked for example assignments, and the Learning Assessment Committee responded by creating an ILO Resources Canvas shell, where faculty can share assignments related to ILOs. Come for a quick review of how ILO assessment works at Laney, and a tour of the new Canvas shell. Bring some folks from your department! There will be plenty of time for questions.

3-3:50pm   PeopleSoft Upgrade Training (Inger Stark)

Description: Join Inger Stark, Staff Development Coordinator to learn to navigate Faculty Center and Employee Self Service in the newly upgraded PeopleSoft 9.2:

  • 45 minutes – Faculty Center (for instructors) – view teaching load, assignments, schedules, class rosters, student contact information, and know where to find/submit class rosters and grades.
  • 15 minutes – Employee Self Service (for all employees) – review paychecks, W2s, update personal details, and review a summary of your benefits.

3-3:50pm    STEM Equity and Goal/Mastery Grading (Amy Bohorquez, Kathy Williamson)

Description: Join our STEM equity group for a discussion about techniques for Goal/Mastery Grading in STEM. We’ll discuss the positives and some of the challenges as well as other means of evaluating student success in our courses.
