Community Service Projects

As a regular part of our program of Vocational Education, the Wood Technology program at Laney College designs, constructs and installs projects donated to local non-profit organizations.

Each semester students in Laney’s Cabinet and Furniture making program organize into small production teams to put their newly-acquired skills to work. Each team is responsible for the layout, machining and assembly of a project for the local community. The standards and pace of the job mirrors that of the shops in which team members may be employed upon graduation. Students learn to communicate with, and depend upon, one another to successfully complete the assigned task.

Materials for our community service work are generally donated by local suppliers. Our sponsors include:

  • EarthSource Forest Products, Oakland, CA
  • Higgins Lumber Co., Livermore, CA
  • Blum Hardware Co.

The Wood Technology department is seeking both suppliers and recipients for future projects to be donated to our community.
