On May 9, 2025, Laney College hosted its annual EOPS/CARE/NextUP/CalWORKs Awards Celebration at Preservation Park in Oakland, honoring students whose academic journeys have been supported by these transformative programs. Held under the theme "Unity, Collaboration, Innovation: Strengthening Bridges for Student Success," the event celebrated perseverance, community, and educational achievement.

The celebration featured remarks from key campus leaders including Lorena Lopez, Dean of Enrollment Services, Dr. Rebecca Opsata, Acting President of Laney College, and Dr. Lily Espinoza, Vice President of Student Services. Their messages reinforced Laney’s commitment to equity and the importance of holistic student support.

The event also spotlighted the voices of students, including Jordan Edmonds, Jasmine Gaona, and Anthony Landry, who shared powerful reflections on their personal and academic growth. Their stories offered insight into the real-life impact of wraparound services such as academic counseling, financial assistance, and emotional support provided by the programs.

Counselors Nina Truong, Marcela Zambrano, Carolyn Cornelius, and DeEboni Noureddine were acknowledged for their vital roles in guiding students through their educational paths.

One of the most anticipated parts of the ceremony was the recognition of graduates and transfer students, highlighting the achievements of those moving on to four-year institutions and other academic or career milestones.

The celebration concluded with heartfelt closing remarks from Lorena Lopez, who thanked faculty, staff, and community supporters for their continued dedication to student success.

Special thanks were extended to the Laney Bookstore, EOPS Advisory Board Members, campus and community partners for helping make the event possible.

This year’s celebration served not only as a recognition of individual achievement, but also as a powerful reminder of the collective support systems that help Laney students thrive.
