Summer Bridge, Prep Academy, and new student-led clubs strengthen support for future STEM leaders.
This summer, Laney College’s Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Program teamed up with the STEM Core Program to launch a Mathematics and Engineering-focused Summer Bridge Program. Fourteen engineering-interested students and prospective MESA scholars took part, gaining early preparation and community before the fall semester.

Following the bridge program, MESA hosted its semesterly three-day MESA Prep Academy, designed to help its newest recruits strengthen their foundation for the upcoming academic year.
Recruitment efforts also saw major success. In collaboration with Laney’s Web Content Developer, MESA launched a dynamic outreach campaign that brought in over 110 applications within just 31 days. As of now, the program has welcomed 79 MESA scholars, 6 ASEM students, and 32 Emerging MESA scholars, supported through both the MESA grant and the Children Now grant.
Laney’s newest Physics instructor will also be launching the program’s Calculus 1 Academic Excellence Workshop this fall—an exciting addition to MESA’s academic support offerings.
Beyond academics, MESA is building student leadership on campus. This semester, the program supported the launch of two new student-led clubs: the Women in STEM Club and the Pre-Med/Future Physician’s Club, providing spaces for students to connect around shared interests and professional goals.
By fostering community and preparing students for transfer and STEM careers, Laney’s MESA Program is quickly becoming a hub for innovation, empowerment, and opportunity.
