Supporting the Whole Student: Inside Laney College’s Wellness Center

At Laney College, student success isn’t just about academics—it’s about making sure students have the support they need to show up, stay engaged, and move forward in their lives.

That’s where the Laney College Wellness Center comes in.

Serving as a central hub for mental health and well-being, the Wellness Center provides free, confidential support to students navigating everything from academic stress to deeper personal challenges. This year alone, the center has supported more than 350 students through individual therapy, helping remove barriers that can stand in the way of success.

More Than Therapy

While one-on-one counseling remains a core service, the Wellness Center has expanded its approach to include holistic and community-based care—meeting students where they are and recognizing that healing doesn’t look the same for everyone.

Over the past year, students have had access to:

The goal is simple: create multiple entry points for students to take care of themselves—whether that’s through conversation, movement, creativity, or cultural practices.

A Space to Land

The Wellness Center also offers drop-in consultations, giving students a low-pressure way to connect with support—even if they’re not sure what they need yet.

Students can access:

  • Up to 8 free therapy sessions per semester
  • Short consultations to explore next steps
  • Group workshops and skill-building sessions
  • Crisis support and referrals

And for those moments that can’t wait, students have access to 24/7 mental health resources, including the 988 crisis line.

Community Care in Moments That Matter

The Wellness Center also plays a critical role in supporting students during times of loss and crisis. Following the passing of beloved Laney College football coach John Beam in November 2025, the team provided immediate mental health support to students, athletes, and the broader campus community. Through counseling, drop-in support, and spaces for reflection, the Wellness Center helped students process grief and navigate a deeply emotional moment for Laney.

Students Supporting Students

A key part of the center’s impact comes from its Student Mental Health Navigators—peer leaders who help connect students to resources and reduce the stigma around seeking support.

These students play a critical role in outreach, education, and creating a campus culture where mental health is talked about openly and without judgment. The program continues to grow, with additional student positions opening next year.

Looking Ahead: Expanding Access

Support doesn’t stop when the semester ends.

This summer, Laney will launch a Peralta-wide online mental health clinic, offering students access to up to six virtual therapy sessions—making support more flexible and accessible.

Students can also tap into the Wellness Companion Hub, a statewide resource connecting all California community college students to free tools, guided meditations, and wellness content across mental, physical, and sexual health.

Why It Matters

Mental health continues to be one of the biggest factors impacting student success. While progress is being made, it remains a critical issue—especially for young adults.

Laney’s Wellness Center is working to shift that reality by creating a space where students don’t have to figure it out alone.

Whether it’s through therapy, a yoga class, a conversation with a peer, or simply walking in for the first time, the message is clear: support is here—and it’s for you.
