Decolonizing Latinidades: Race, Gender, Nationality, and Sexuality. Lecture and workshop led by Dr. Gabriela Spears-Rico who is an Assistant Professor of Chicanx and Latinx Studies and American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota.
Yosimar Reyes is an undocumented American poet and activist, who was born in Guerrero, Mexico and raised in East San Jose, California. He is the author of “For Color Boys Who Speak Softly” and currently serves as the Artist in Residence at Define American. He is currently working on the development of his one man show, “Prieto”.

Art As Activism lecture by Melanie Cervantes. She is an internationally renowned Xicana printmaker, artist, and political activist located in the Bay Area. She is the co-founder of Dignidad Rebelde, an Oakland-based arts collective that is grounded in principles of Xicanisma and Zapatismo. Melanie creates visual/poster art that is an empowering reflection of community struggles, dreams, and visions.

Dia de los Muertos Laney College Style! The theme was “Dreams Beyond Borders and Bars”, in an effort to bring light to the physical, spiritual, and geographic borders that our communities continue to navigate and resist. Representatives from Bay Area organizations and coalitions that organize around immigrant rights and prisoner rights shared their work and information on how students can get involved. There was dancing, food, music, speeches, a community altar, art installations and more to celebrate!
Resisting the Prison Industrial Complex is a multiracial and inter-generational panel discussion on community resistance efforts against mass incarceration among communities of color. Panelists shared their experiences and perspectives as former prisoners, crusaders against mass incarceration and advocates for the rights of prisoners, their families and ex-offenders. This event took place at Laney College, on November 14, 2013.
