Title: Tribute to Dudley Williams, 2019

Class: Dance 8A Composition & Choreography

Performers: Jonathan Corley, Gideon Mekwunye, Tyriq Collins

Choreography: Alvin Ailey, 1961

Background: Choreography I students pay tribute to the late Dudley Williams (b. 1938, d. 2015), principal dancer with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, founded by Alvin Ailey (b.1931, d.1989).  Inspired by Williams’ career longevity, strength and grace, students from Choreography I render a trio version of Mr. William’s original solo, “I Wanna Be Ready,” first performed in 1961 as part of Ailey’s Revelations-an iconic work reflecting the deepest emotions behind African American Negro spirituals.

As a part of our K-12 concurrent and dual enrollment programs, students from Skyline High School’s dance production class (under the supervision of Dawn James, Director of Dance at Skyline High School) perform in Laney’s annual dance productions.
