Athletic Instruction

OVERVIEW

Laney College offers six sports teams for student-athlete participation: football, baseball, women’s water polo, women’s basketball, women’s track and field, women’s cross country, and women’s swimming and diving. In order to participate in intercollegiate athletics, student-athletes must fulfill eligibility requirements as set forth by the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) and Laney College.

Student-athletes must adhere to the following requirements for eligibility:

• Meet with a counselor and complete a Student Educational Plan (SEP).

• Maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA.)

• Successfully complete 24 units between the first and second season of competition in a specific sport, of which 18 units must be academic.

• Maintain active enrollment in a minimum of 12 units during the semester of competition, of which 9 units must be academic.

  1. Athletic Coach: With a focus on athletic instruction, you could become a coach for sports teams at various levels, including youth leagues, high schools, colleges, and professional organizations. Coaches are responsible for developing athletes' skills, designing training programs, and providing guidance and support both on and off the field.
  2. Physical Education Teacher: Many schools require certified physical education teachers to lead classes and activities aimed at promoting physical fitness and overall wellness among students. With a degree in Kinesiology and a focus on athletic instruction, you could pursue a career as a physical education teacher in elementary, middle, or high schools.
  3. Personal Trainer: As a personal trainer, you would work one-on-one with clients to develop personalized exercise programs, provide instruction on proper technique and form, and offer guidance on nutrition and lifestyle choices. Personal trainers often work in fitness centers, gyms, or as independent contractors.
  4. Strength and Conditioning Coach: Strength and conditioning coaches work with athletes to improve their strength, speed, agility, and overall athletic performance. They design and implement training programs tailored to the specific needs of individual athletes or sports teams, often working in collegiate athletic programs, professional sports organizations, or private training facilities.
  5. Athletic Director: Athletic directors oversee sports programs and athletic departments within schools, colleges, or recreational organizations. They are responsible for managing budgets, scheduling competitions and events, hiring coaches and staff, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and policies.
  6. Sports Camp Director: Many organizations and institutions offer sports camps and clinics for children and teenagers during school breaks and summer vacations. As a sports camp director, you would be responsible for planning and organizing camp activities, hiring staff, coordinating facilities, and ensuring the safety and well-being of participants.
  7. Sports Marketing and Management: A degree in Kinesiology with a focus on athletic instruction can also prepare you for careers in sports marketing, management, and administration. You could work for sports teams, athletic brands, marketing agencies, or event management companies, helping to promote athletes, coordinate sponsorships, or organize sporting events.
  8. Recreation Coordinator/Manager: Recreation coordinators and managers plan and oversee recreational programs and activities for community centers, parks, and recreational facilities. This could include organizing sports leagues, fitness classes, outdoor adventures, and other recreational opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.
