Thursday, 12/7

Today, we will finish up Module 29 (Module 29 – Hypothesis Testing with Population Means). And based on the response from the google doc, I think we should go over Test 3

  • Here’s Project 6.  This one is OPTIONAL!  It is due by our Final Exam day: 12/12/17, 5 pm.

Tuesday, 12/5

We will have Test #3 today!  You are allowed 1 page of handwritten notes and it covers Modules 21, 22, 23, 27 and 28.

On Thursday, 12/7, we will have a day to review for the final exam!  If you would like to suggest topics for me to review in class on Thursday, 12/7, please type them on this document.  I will use this as a guide to prepare for class on Thursday!

Finish the handout for: Module 22 and Intro to 23

We are skipping the end of Module 23 (about Type 1 and Type 2 Errors).  This will be extra credit on the upcoming project #5, as well as on our tests and final exam!

When we are done with that, we will start Module 27  **Notice: we are skipping over Modules 24-26!

Tuesday, 11/7

We will take Test #2 on this day!  Please recall that there are practice tests/quizzes with solutions here!  And you can look at the quizzes from this semester here.  This test will cover Module 15, part 3 through Module 20 AND part of Module 21 (just what we finished last time).  You may use one page of notes.

We will have no class on Thursday, 11/9.  Please use this time wisely.  If you have not turned in any of the 1st 3 projects, please finish them and turn them in by Tuesday, 11/14.  We will start another project that week.

  • Work on Mini-Project #3.  This will be due on Tuesday, 10/24
  • Complete Test Corrections.   If you’d like to complete test corrections, you may earn up to HALF the points you missed on the exam.  You must write EACH problem you MISSED over on a separate piece of paper, with the correct work for solving.  I will give you a fraction of the possible points (half the points you missed), based on the fraction of points you redo correctly.  This should allow anyone who may have failed the test to earn a passing grade.  I would like your corrections by Tuesday, 10/24 (we don’t have  class on 10/26!).  They should be written on separate paper, stapled to your test.

Tuesday, 9/26

I will miss my regular office hours today, but will go directly to our classroom right after my meeting (officially over at 430, will go to class earlier, if ends early).  I can also stay after class for at least 30 minutes (probably 45 minutes works) to continue answering questions, should you have any.  Your Mini-Project #2’s are due today as well.

In class, we will finish up Module 15, by completing the in class assignment for Unit 6 module 15, Part 3

When we are done with that (or after the break, even if we are not done!), we will discuss the Mindsets and Grow Your Brain articles and talk about the upcoming exam.

For the last part of class, I would like to have a test review.  If there are no direct questions, we can look to the quizzes and tests from this semester and last semester to guide our review.

We will spend the entire duration of class on the test on Thursday.  Next week Tuesday, we will devote time in class to working on the next Mini-Project, before starting Module 16.  If you’d like to get started early, here is a link to Mini-Project #3 and here is a link to the data for Project #3.

Homework for Thursday:

1. Study for your test.  It will cover Modules 4 – 15 (through part 2).  The test is individual, but you may use 1 regular sized (8.5″ by 11″) page of notes, both sides.

Quiz 3 (Modules 11_12_13)

Homework:

  1. Mini Project #2 will be due on Tuesday, 9/26.  Finish this this weekend!
  2. Study for our first Test! Our first test will be on Thursday, 9/28!  It will cover all modules we have completed in class through Unit 6, Module 15, part 2.  For your test, you will take it individually and are allowed 1 page of notes.
  3. No Checkpoints or other homework is due on the day of the Test.
  4. On Tuesday – I have to go to a meeting form 330-430 pm, so my Office Hours will be 430-5 pm and after class.  I’m happy to stay after class to help out.  In class, we will review for the test and complete Module 15.

We will first talk about outliers and how to find them.  I will also show you an example of how to create a box-plot.  I will focus more on histograms than boxplots in this class.  I will also do a short recap of the important bits of Unit 3.

Thursday 8/31

Thursday 8/24

We will start the class off in groups talking about your estimates of the % of red books in the Laney Library!

After this, I will break you up into NEW groups and you will write a SHORT summary for a module of my choosing with your new group (either module 4, 5 or 6).  I will collect those by having each group email me a link to a google doc that the group creates OR you will write something by hand.

After this, we will complete another activity by looking at articles in a recent copy of Women’s World magazine.  The assignment can be found here.  I will hand out articles in class to each group.

Homework:

  1. Read Unit 3, Modules 7, 8, 9 and 10 in oli.cmu.edu.  Modules 7, 8 and 9 reading is due Tuesday, 8/29.  Module 10 reading is due 8/31.

In class, we will discuss the syllabus, the website, our textbook, etc. Then we will break into groups and complete an activity where you get to know your classmates.  Last, we will get into new groups and complete an activity that gets you a little exercise!

  2. Register for our class textbook/homework system: oli.cmu.edu  (Due immediately!  You cannot read without this!)
  3. Read Unit 2 (modules 4, 5 and 6) in oli.cmu.edu and complete the activities in the reading (Due by Thursday 8/24, beginning of class)
