On behalf of the Laney College Classified Senate, Peralta is proud to announce the recipients of this year’s Rene Rivas Classified Senate Scholarship. Although Rene’s family could not attend the ceremony, they thoughtfully reviewed the applications and selected the awardees listed below. Each recipient was awarded a $500 scholarship to support their educational goals.
Joevel Quiatchon
College of Alameda
Veteran
Major: Sociology
"I may not have an official title or belong to a formal organization, but I make a difference in the ways that matter to me. By helping the people around me and ensuring that no one feels forgotten. My journey has taught me that impact isn't measured by the number of organizations you belong to but by the number of lives you touch."
Joevel Quiatchon is pursuing a career in Human Resources or Education (teaching) to advocate for workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion. He is transferring to UC Berkeley in the Fall.
Donjai "DJ" Holland
Laney College
Peer Tutor/Mentor
Major: Public Health & Biostatistics
"My ultimate goal is to bridge the gap between mathematical literacy and accessibility, particularly for underrepresented students in STEM. I intend to carry these lessons with me, advocating for equitable educational opportunities and fostering a new generation of students who are competent in math and confident in their abilities to excel. My time at Laney College has shown me the power of representation and the importance of meeting students where they are."
Donjai Holland plans to attend graduate school at UC Berkeley, majoring in biostatistics.
