At Laney College, students are organized into Learning and Student Communities. These groups are made up of students with specific needs or who have been disproportionately affected. By grouping students into these cohorts, we can focus on addressing inequities and providing tailored support to those who face greater challenges (such as EOPS, SAS, Veterans, etc.)
Adult Education
Our Adult Education Program is designed to meet the diverse needs of adult learners in the community. Whether you’re looking to earn a high school diploma, learn English, or enhance your career skills, we have a wide range of programs and services to support your goals.
Asian/Pacific American Student Success
APASS is designed to support Asian/Pacific Americans in pursuit of academic success by promoting individual growth and personal success through a culturally sensitive environment, recognizing the cultural diversity within the Asian and Pacific Islander communities, and fostering unity within the multicultural college community and beyond.
Associated Students of Laney College
EOPS, CARE, NextUP & CalWORKs
The Extended Opportunity Programs & Services (EOPS) at Laney College supports students facing social, economic, and educational challenges by providing resources for academic success. Specialized programs include CARE for single parents, NextUp for foster youth, and LaneyWORKs for CalWORKs recipients, offering financial assistance, counseling, and career support to promote self-sufficiency. Each program is tailored to help students overcome obstacles and achieve their educational goals.

Gateway To College
Gateway to College is a scholarship program that provides academically and economically disenfranchised Alameda County residents 16 to 20 years old with an opportunity to experience success in an academically rigorous, supportive and safe environment as they pursue their high school diplomas and transition into college.

Latinx Cultural Center
The Latinx Cultural Center program assists The Latinx Cultural Center helps Chicanx/Latinx students succeed at Laney College by offering group study, tutoring, Indigenous language workshops, ESOL, and job opportunities. It assists with enrollment, scholarships, financial aid, and serves as a welcome and referral center. The Center focuses on outreach, recruitment, and education through credit and non-credit courses, and provides support in basic skills, CTE, ESOL, and Spanish for bilingual students.
MESA
Laney College’s MESA Program is dedicated to empowering underserved and underrepresented students to succeed in STEM fields, offering support to help them excel in their courses, earn degrees, and transfer to four-year institutions.
Puente Program
The Laney Puente Program helps students transfer to four-year colleges through accelerated instruction, academic counseling, and leadership opportunities. Focused on Latinx literature, it welcomes students of all backgrounds. Over one year, students take classes with the same instructor, receive personalized counseling, and gain career insights from mentors to support their academic and professional success.
Queer Community Center (QCC)
Laney College’s Queer Community Center (QCC) provides a safe, supportive space for LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff. It offers educational programs, workshops, and activities to foster community, while partnering with campus services to provide holistic support, including counseling, healthcare, and academic assistance.
Restoring Our Communities
Restoring Our Communities (ROC) is an academic support program designed by formerly incarcerated people to serve formerly incarcerated students. ROC provides a safe space for students and features a pathways model to support students in obtaining a Career Technical Education certificate/degree, an academic AA/AS degree, and/or transfer to four-year universities.
Transfer Track
Transfer Track is a learning community of students who are planning on transferring from Laney to a four-year institution. Students in the Transfer Track take classes together on campus and are enrolled full-time. Classes in the program are selected to fulfill General Education requirements to help speed up the time to transfer.
Undocumented Community Resource Center
The Undocumented Community Resource Center (UCRC) is a dedicated safe space for undocumented students, students from mixed status families, and allies. The UCRC can assist with issues including AB-540/ CA Residence Questionnaire, the California Dream Act, and connecting to immigration services.
Umoja-UBAKA
The Umoja-UBAKA Student Success Community supports the success, persistence, and graduation of African, African American, and other students through tailored classes, academic counseling, and activities. It enhances cultural and educational experiences by recognizing student voices, histories, and social realities, promoting empowerment through a culturally-responsive curriculum centered on the Black experience.
Veteran Resource Center
The Veteran Resource Center (VRC) provides assistance for active-duty personnel, veterans and their eligible dependents in pursuit of education and in obtaining veterans’ benefits.
Student Communities Guiding Principles
The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) has served as a voice for quality assurance and promulgation of standards in higher education for over twenty five years. CAS was established to promote inter-association efforts to address quality assurance, student learning, and professional integrity. It was believed that a single voice would have greater impact on the evaluation and improvement of services and programs than would many voices speaking for special interests by individual practitioners or by single-interest organizations.
CAS includes membership of over 35 active professional associations and has established standards in over 30 functional areas. It has succeeded in providing a platform through which representatives from across higher education can jointly develop and promulgate standards of good practice that are endorsed not just by those working in a particular area, but by representatives of higher education association.
CAS often cites George Washington, who said, “Let us raise a standard to which the wise and honest can repair.” CAS has raised standards; it is now time to focus on the attributes, such as wisdom and honesty, of those professionals who would use the standards. Professionals working to provide services in higher education share more than a commitment to quality assurance and standards of practice. A review of the ethical statements of member associations demonstrates clearly that there are elements of ethical principles and values that are shared across the professions in higher education.
Most of the member associations represented in CAS are guided by ethical codes of professional practice enforced through the prescribed channels of its association. CAS acknowledges and respects the individual codes and standards of ethical conduct of their organizations. From these codes, CAS has created a statement of shared ethical principles that focuses on seven basic principles that form the foundation for CAS member association codes: autonomy, non-malfeasance, beneficence, justice, fidelity, veracity, and affiliation. This statement is not intended to replace or supplant the code of ethics of any professional association; rather, it is intended to articulate those shared ethical principles. It is our
hope that by articulating those shared beliefs, CAS can promulgate a better understanding of the professions of those in service to students and higher education.
Principle I – Autonomy
We take responsibility for our actions and both support and empower an individual’s and group’s freedom of choice.

When professionals act in accordance with ethical principles, program quality and excellence are enhanced and ultimately students are better served. As professionals providing services in higher education, we are committed to upholding these shared ethical principles, for the benefit of our students, our professions, and higher education.
