What Does It Mean to Be a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI)?
A Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) is any college or university where at least 25% of full-time equivalent undergraduate students identify as Hispanic, Chicanx, or Latinx. This federal designation allows institutions to receive funding to enhance educational opportunities focused on the Latinx student experience and support their academic success, with services/programs open to all students. Currently, there are 572 HSI colleges and universities nationwide, with 170 in California.

At Laney College, being an HSI is more than just a designation — it’s a commitment to uplifting, supporting, and empowering the Chicanx/Latinx studentexperience. We embrace our identity as a Hispanic serving institution, ensuring that students not only see themselves reflected in our campus community but also feel genuinely supported in their academic journey.
Through culturally responsive programs, student services, and faculty engagement, we strive to create an environment the Latinx experience is felt, seen, valued, and equipped to support all student success. At Laney, being an HSI means fostering belonging, representation, and opportunity—because when our students thrive, our entire community grows stronger.
The Latinx Club at Laney College is a student-led organization that celebrates Latinx culture, fosters community, and promotes academic and personal growth and is open to all students. It provides a supportive space for students to connect, share experiences, and engage in cultural, educational, and social activities.

The Undocumented Community Resource Center (UCRC) is a dedicated safe space for all students to understand the experience of undocumented students, students from mixed status families, and allies.
The UCRC can assist with issues including AB-540/ CA Residence Questionnaire, the California Dream Act, and connecting to immigration services. The Center also provides information and resources on scholarships, clubs, food pantry and community resources.
