Laney College Hosts Young Adult Program Art Show

The Tower Lobby at Laney College has transformed into a vibrant gallery space this month as students from Oakland Unified School District’s Young Adult Program (YAP) proudly present their Fall 2025 Fundamentals of Painting exhibition.

The show, which runs through December 12, highlights the creativity, individuality, and expressive voice of students who have been hard at work this semester in Frederico Alvarado’s painting course.

The Young Adult Program is part of OUSD’s Special Education department, designed to help students build independence, confidence, and meaningful connections to the world around them. At Laney, YAP students participate in dual enrollment classes, including several in the Art Department that support their pathway toward earning a certificate in Art.

This exhibition is more than a display of artwork—it’s a celebration of the students’ growth, effort, and imagination. Visitors are greeted by bold colors, expressive forms, and original pieces that reflect each student’s unique perspective.

A Partnership that Makes a Difference

The success of this collaboration is supported by dedicated OUSD and Laney leaders, including:

  • Jake Hall, Principal, Young Adult Program (OUSD)

  • David Cammarata, OUSD Administrator, Special Education

  • Dr. Nathan Failing, SAS Counselor/Coordinator at Laney College, who helps support YAP students as they navigate dual enrollment and connect their academic experience to future goals

Their commitment to accessible, inclusive education—and the partnership between OUSD and Laney College—provides YAP students with opportunities to explore college life, build artistic skills, and envision future academic and creative goals.

A Feel-Good Moment for the Campus

Faculty, staff, and students passing through the Tower Lobby have paused to admire the work, many expressing joy and appreciation for the talent on display. The exhibition has quickly become a heartwarming highlight on campus and a powerful reminder of what students can achieve when creativity, support, and opportunity come together.

Laney College is proud to partner with OUSD’s Young Adult Program and to provide a space where these emerging artists can share their voices with the community. Their artwork reflects not only learning and skill-building, but confidence, pride, and connection.
