Pride Year-Round: How the QCC Supports Students at Laney College

As Pride Month invites communities across the country to celebrate LGBTQ+ history, resilience, and progress, Laney College continues that work year-round through one of its most impactful student resources: the Queer Community Center (QCC).

Led by Faculty Coordinator Dr. Yih Ren, the QCC serves as a hub for connection, leadership development, support services, and community building. The center is dedicated to helping LGBTQ+ students and allies find a sense of belonging while providing resources that support both academic and personal success.

The Queer Community Center grew out of a statewide effort to strengthen support for LGBTQ+ students and allies. Building on Laney College's earlier Lavender Project, Dr. Ren worked alongside students, faculty, staff, and community partners to transform that vision into a dedicated center focused on belonging, leadership development, support services, and community building.

Today, the QCC is grounded in four core areas: services, programs, connections, and space.

A Space to Belong

For many students, the physical space itself is one of the center's most valuable resources.

The QCC provides a welcoming environment where students can study, relax between classes, connect with peers, and access practical resources such as snacks, school supplies, and academic support materials. By helping address everyday barriers, the center contributes directly to student success and well-being.

More importantly, the center offers something many students seek when arriving at college: a place where they can feel comfortable being themselves and building meaningful relationships with others.

"The goal has always been to create a place where students can feel seen, supported, and connected," said Dr. Ren.

Building Leaders & Community

Beyond the physical space, the QCC provides opportunities for students to develop as leaders, advocates, and engaged members of the campus community.

One example is the QCC Community Engagement, Resilience, and Leadership Scholarship, which recognizes students who demonstrate commitment to leadership, community involvement, and personal growth.

The center also hosts regular drop-in programs, workshops, guest speakers, educational events, and celebrations throughout the year. These programs highlight LGBTQ+ histories, cultures, and experiences while creating opportunities for students to connect, learn, and build community.

Whether students attend a workshop, participate in a discussion, or simply stop by between classes, the goal remains the same: fostering connection and creating opportunities for growth.

Support Beyond the Classroom

The QCC is more than an event space—it is a resource center designed to support students both academically and personally.

Through referrals, resource sharing, mentorship opportunities, and community partnerships, students can access support that helps them navigate college and prepare for future success.

While the center is specifically focused on serving LGBTQ+ students and allies, its doors are open to all students interested in learning, building community, and supporting an inclusive campus environment.

Looking Ahead

As Laney College prepares for future renovations and improvements to student spaces, the QCC continues to plan new programs, events, and opportunities for student engagement.

QCC winnersDr. Ren hopes the center will continue to grow as a welcoming place where students find support, connection, and opportunities for leadership. He also hopes the success of the QCC can help inspire similar efforts across the Peralta Community College District, expanding access to LGBTQ+ resources and community-building opportunities for students at all four colleges.

As Pride Month reminds us of the importance of visibility, inclusion, and belonging, the Queer Community Center stands as a reflection of Laney College's ongoing commitment to supporting students both inside and outside the classroom.

For some students, it may begin as a place to grab a snack, study, or meet a friend. For others, it becomes a community. Either way, the QCC continues to serve as a space where students can connect, grow, lead, and thrive.
