Laney Student Elected SSCCC Region III Treasurer, Urges Peers to Take Action

CK Chan reflects on leadership, advocacy, and amplifying student voices across California

Representing Laney College at this year’s Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC) General Assembly was an incredible honor—and a reminder of why student leadership matters more than ever.

As a delegate from the Associated Students of Laney College (ASLC), I had the privilege to vote on statewide resolutions and help shape the future of student advocacy in California. Even more exciting, I was elected as the Region III Treasurer for SSCCC, a role that allows me to support student voices not only at Laney, but across the entire region.

One of the most powerful moments from the General Assembly was hearing keynote speaker Linda Sarsour. Her message about the responsibility we each carry to lead change really stuck with me. She reminded us that while it’s easy to point out problems, it’s much harder—and more important—to take action. I walked away more committed than ever to doing exactly that.

In just six months with ASLC, I’ve learned how vital it is for students to be engaged. Yet many of my peers don’t realize how many opportunities are available through student government and organizations like SSCCC. I want to help change that by sharing what I’ve learned and encouraging more students to get involved, speak out, and take advantage of the support systems already in place.

As Treasurer, my responsibilities include managing Region III’s budget, leading fundraising initiatives, contributing to policy development, and ensuring financial transparency. These are not just tasks on a checklist—they're tools to help amplify student advocacy and build a stronger support network for our campuses.

Student government isn’t just about meetings or titles. It’s about making real, meaningful changes that ripple across our communities. I’m here to serve, to act, and to help my peers rise.
