Laney Student Builds Resource Hub to Guide Future Healthcare Professionals

Laney College student Pricilla Guillen knows firsthand how confusing the path to a healthcare career can be. As a first-generation high school and college graduate, she remembers spending hours searching for reliable information—trying to piece together how to move from community college to medical or allied-health programs.

Now, she’s turning that experience into action.

With help from a fellow student, Thomas F. Raffa of Foothill College, Pricilla created the Community College to Healthcare Handbook, a website and mobile app designed to simplify the journey for aspiring healthcare professionals. The project offers step-by-step guidance for students and career changers pursuing healthcare careers through community college pathways—whether they’re aiming to become physicians, nurses, physician assistants, or medical assistants.

I started this project so other students wouldn’t have to struggle the way I did. I wanted everything in one place—something simple, reliable, and encouraging.

The site also highlights internship opportunities, clearly noting whether they’re paid and whether housing is provided—key details for students trying to gain real experience without sacrificing financial stability.

Pricilla’s idea took shape during her time in the Stanford Community College Premedical Program (SSCCPP) ’25 Cohort, where she and her peers examined health disparities and recognized a major gap in pre-med advising support for community college students. That insight became the foundation for their shared vision:

“For every student who has ever been told, ‘You can’t,’ we’re here to show you that you can and help you reach new heights. The Community College to Healthcare Handbook provides clear, step-by-step guidance for students and career changers pursuing healthcare careers through community college pathways. Inside, you’ll discover practical tips, side-by-side program comparisons—all designed to equip you with the knowledge, confidence, and inspiration to make informed choices and achieve your goals in the healthcare field.”

A MESA Scholar and Senior Student Ambassador, as well as President of the Future Physicians Club at Laney College, Pricilla continues to advocate for equitable access to education and mentorship. Her goal is to help students feel confident as they progress through their studies and extracurricular activities, knowing their dream careers in healthcare are attainable.
