Department Overview
The Ethnic Studies program is designed to assist all students in developing an understanding and appreciation of diverse peoples and cultures at a local and global level. Using comparative methodologies and honoring community-based knowledge, our programs emphasize a critical understanding of race and race relations.
Students may elect among the following majors:
- African American Studies
- Asian/Asian-American Studies
- Ethnic Studies
- Mexican/Latin-American Studies
- Native American Studies
Each program provides a sound background for students preparing to pursue a degree in Ethnic Studies or a related field on transfer to four-year institutions while also supporting the acquisition of skills that will enhance career opportunities in education, public health, government, community-based agencies, and beyond.
Career Opportunities
A degree in Ethnic Studies equips students with a deep understanding of race, ethnicity, culture, power, and identity—providing critical tools to examine systemic inequality, social movements, and the experiences of historically marginalized communities. The interdisciplinary nature of the field prepares graduates for a wide range of careers across sectors that value equity, inclusion, critical thinking, and cultural competency.
Education and Community Engagement
Graduates may pursue teaching, curriculum development, or educational programming focused on social justice, diversity, and culturally responsive instruction in schools, colleges, and community organizations.
Nonprofit and Advocacy Work
Ethnic Studies graduates are well-prepared for roles in advocacy, community organizing, program coordination, and policy analysis within nonprofits that focus on civil rights, immigration, housing, health equity, and more.
Law and Public Policy
A strong foundation in social justice and critical thinking makes Ethnic Studies an excellent pathway for students interested in law, public policy, or government service, including positions in legislative advocacy, public affairs, or human rights.
Media, Arts, and Communications
Students with Ethnic Studies backgrounds bring vital perspectives to careers in journalism, filmmaking, publishing, public relations, and the arts—where representation, storytelling, and cultural analysis are essential.
Health and Social Services
Graduates can work in areas such as public health, mental health services, social work, and health education, particularly in roles that focus on serving diverse or underrepresented communities.
Business, DEI, and Human Resources
Increasingly, companies and institutions seek individuals with knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Ethnic Studies graduates can lead or support DEI efforts, employee training, and organizational change.
Ethnic Studies not only deepens students' understanding of the world—it empowers them to advocate for equity, lead change, and pursue careers rooted in justice, empathy, and inclusion.
