Statistics Blog Spring 2020

THIS PAGE IS FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT ENROLLED!!!  Enrolled students should look in Canvas

Monday, 27 January:

Today we will first finish up the Poster Project!  Please remember to submit your poster, with the answers to the questions posed.  Write your names on your work, please.

Once that is done, we will have a lecture on Module 4 (Module 7 for the old class), using these slides.

After we are done with that, I would like each of you to learn how to use Google Sheets!  If you don’t have a gmail account, you can use Excel, but it’s much easier to make Histograms in Sheets.  I will ask you to make Histograms for the variable you choose to use in your Poster Project (if your data is quantitative – if not, pick one!).  You will be required to use Google Sheets to create histograms for your first Take Home Exam, so please come with an open mind and try it out!  Here is a link to the cereal data again (Links to an external site.).  Please send me a link to your google sheet with the histograms (each of you, independently) and please answer the questions in the assignment on the same sheet you share with me (you may work on this as a group, but I would like you each to write out the answers so you have them to refer to): Create 2 Histograms and Compare them!

Homework:

  1. If you didn’t finish your Histograms, please submit them before Wednesday, 1/29
  2. Read Unit 3, Module 8 and Module 9 in OLI.  This reading will be due Wednesday, 1/29, at the start of class
  3. Read the following article and answer the questions posed at the end of the article: Grow Your Brain Questions are due by Monday, 2/3.
  4. Complete the Checkpoint for Module 7 in OLI (due Wednesday, 2/5)
  5. Complete your first assignment (If you didn’t already)
  6. Read the following article and answer the questions at the end of it: Mindsets Article with Questions  (If you haven’t already).

Homework:

  1. Read Unit 2, Module 5 and Read Unit 2, Module 6 in Online Learning Initiative (OLI).  This reading will be due on Wednesday, 1/29, at the start of class.  (These two are shorter than Module 4)
  2. Read the You Can Grow Your Brain article.  You can find the article here: Grow Your Brain Questions (Links to an external site.).  Please submit your answers to the questions in this assignment by Monday, 2/3: Grow Your Brain Article with Questions
  3. Complete the Checkpoint for Module 4 (due Wednesday, 2/5)

Wednesday, January 22:

First, we will go through iPad assignments – each student will be assigned an iPad to use in our class.

Next, we will set up our textbook.  Since you are not enrolled, you won’t be able to access Canvas, so you will need to register with our online homework system (oli.cmu.edu), using the course key Math13Spr17. This is my OLD course, but you can use it for FREE till you are enrolled!!  Once you are enrolled, we will do everything through Canvas.  This version of the book does NOT align with the one we are using in class, so please refer to here when looking for assignments till you are enrolled.

Next, we will also look at the syllabus.

After that, we will also take a survey in class.

Finally, we will take a break and complete a group project to get to know each other and to try thinking statistically in a (hopefully) fun way!  Each group will be expected to present the poster they create in their group.  Here is a link to the assignment: Cereal Project.pdf and here is a link to the data we will investigate and here is a link to some cereal commercials:

Great 90’s Cereal Commercials

I would like each group to turn in their poster at the end of class (make sure YOUR name is on it, since you cannot submit via Canvas!)

Homework:

  1. Complete your First Day Assignment – Introduce Yourself! (Due by Monday 1/27)
  2. Read Unit 3, Module 8 (Distributions for Quantitative Data) in Online Learning Initiative (OLI) – our Textbook! and complete the activities in the reading (Due by Monday, 1/27, beginning of class)

BELOW IS FUTURE WORK.  IT MAY CHANGE, DEPENDING ON WHAT I DECIDE TO DO THIS SEMESTER, SO DON’T TAKE IT TOO SERIOUSLY!!

We will first spend some time finishing up the practice take home exam, Eastern vs. Western States Spending on K-12 Education.  Here is the data for that project in Google Sheets, just in case you need it.  I would like to get ONE paper from each group that I can grade and hand back to you.  I will have you write this and submit it to me with all of your group members names on it.  I would like to grade these over the weekend so that you can all see how I grade Take Home Exams.  You must be present to earn credit for this work with your group (same groups as last time, since we started it on Monday).

After this, we will talk about the Standard Deviation (Module 7).  Once that is done, we will spend the rest of class taking your first Quiz and working on your first Take Home Exam: Take Home Exam 1 and here is the data, which focuses on the Standard Deviation (rather than the 5 Number Summary/Median from the practice take home exam).  Please be reminded that you may work with others on your take home exam, BUT your paper should be unique and in your own words. If your paper is too close to another student’s, you will be asked to redo the assignment and you will receive no credit for the one submitted.

When you are done, or if you choose, you may work on any assignments you have yet to submit and get help!  Unfortunately, we won’t have tutors in our class until the budget gets straightened out, but we do have 2 tutors assigned to our class!!!  Also – there is statistics tutors available at ALL TIMES the Math Lab is open!!!  Monday – Thursday 9 am to 7 pm!!

Homework:

  1. No Quiz next week Wednesday, as there is no class on Monday
  2. Complete the Checkpoints for Modules 8, 9 and 10 in OLI (due Wednesday, 9/4, start of class)
  3. Complete Take Home Exam 1 by Wednesday, 9/11, start of class.
  4. Read and submit: Grow Your Brain Questions are due by Monday, 9/9.  You can submit your answers to questions in Canvas here: Grow Your Brain Article with Questions
  5. Read Modules 11 and 12 in OLI for Wednesday, 9/4

Monday, 26 August:

I will add everyone – please get an add code during the break or after class today!!

Today we will meet in our new classroom: F-203!  We will be using iPads, so please feel free to bring your own laptop, if you prefer.

Today we will start off talking about how to write statistically.  We will use this example, which is still looking at the cereal data from last week.

After that, I would like to talk about Modules 5 and 6, using these slides as a guide and returning to the cereal data to demonstrate examples.

Lastly, we will work on Eastern vs. Western States Spending on K-12 Education.  Here is the data for that project in Google Sheets.  This project is an example of a Take Home Exam that we will work on in class.  I would like to get ONE paper from each group that I can grade and hand back to you.  I will have you write this and submit it to me with all of your group members names on it.  These take me a LONG time to grade, but I can handle one from each group and give it back before your take home exam so you know what to expect!  We will see if there is enough time to complete it today in class.
