Student Rights & Responsibilities

At Laney College, we want every student to have a safe, supportive, and fair environment to learn and grow. Knowing your rights and responsibilities helps you advocate for yourself, respect others, and make the most of your college experience.

Your Rights as a Student

Laney College is committed to fostering a respectful and supportive community, whether you are learning in class, online, or anywhere college activities take place. The following rights apply in all learning environments:

  • Right to Safety – to learn in an environment that protects your psychological, physical, and emotional well-being, free from discrimination, harassment, or violence.

  • Right to Fair Process – to receive due process in any disciplinary action, including the chance to be heard and to appeal.

  • Right to Access – to equal opportunity in education, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or background.

  • Right to Support – to access academic, wellness, and mental health resources.

  • Right to Expression – to share your ideas and beliefs respectfully without retaliation.

  • Right to Expression and Posting - Students have the right to express ideas and promote campus and student activities. To do so responsibly, please follow the Rules for Posting on Campus.

Your Responsibilities as a Student

  • Respect Others – treat classmates, faculty, and staff with dignity and care.
  • Uphold Integrity – practice honesty in academics (no cheating, plagiarism, or misrepresentation).
  • Follow College Policies – abide by the Student Code of Conduct and Title IX guidelines
  • Take Care of Yourself & Community – use campus resources when you need them, and contribute to a safe, inclusive environment.
  • Engage in Learning – attend classes, participate, and bring your best to the Laney community
