Kathy Ma

Hello!  My name is Kathy, and I’ve been counseling students at Laney College since 2005.  After getting my Bachelor’s degree in Communication at UC Santa Barbara, I ran several social service and public health programs before heading to UC Berkeley to earn my Master’s degree in Social Welfare.  Since then, I’ve worked in vocational rehabilitation assisting people with disabilities find employment and provided career counseling services at the East Bay Works Career Center in downtown Oakland.  My first job at Laney was coordinating the DSPS-WorkAbility program where I taught work readiness classes and counseled students on their career paths.  In 2008, I moved to the Counseling Department.  I enjoy my work and feel fortunate that I can serve my community.  As the daughter of immigrants and the first in my family to finish high school and go to college, I can relate to the experiences of many Laney students.  In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, cooking, reading, swing dancing and playing tennis and pickleball.  I encourage you to make an appointment to see me in Counseling.  I’ll help you develop an education plan to ensure you are on the right track to achieve your goals!
