12/4/2021 NEW, STREAMLINED CURRICULUM UPDATING PROCESS
On 12/4/21 the Laney College Curriculum Committee approved an official Curriculum Updating Process. The new Curriculum updating process is designed to be simple and straightforward, with clear expectations and timelines. It provides a system that can easily be embedded in the college processes. Curriculum Updating Needs/Solutions: Previous curriculum updating efforts have had little impact on both updates in general, and for embedding a system for curriculum updates. It is necessary to address the need for a long-term plan for updating the curriculum. There is a need to create a predictable, systematic process to address out-of-date curriculum while holding the campus accountable to only scheduling curriculum that is current and relevant. The new process includes timelines for updating, launching, and deadline dates to be met if faculty want the curriculum available for scheduling. Below is the link to the Curriculum Updating Process Document and the adjoining PowerPoint presentation.

9/4/20 – NEW AND IMPROVED DE TAB IN META!
A new and improved DE Tab was developed in META, replacing the 2 previous DE tabs AND the DE Supplement Form. (Yay!)
Beginning Aug. 26, 2020, proposals created in META for new or updated courses will only need to fill out the ONE DE TAB if you are adding/updating DE. The DE Supplement Form is no longer required.
META proposals are currently In Review and the faculty originator would now like to add/update DE to the course, the “Interim DE Addendum” (click on the link below) has been created.
This “Interim” Addenda for DE is a to be used ONLY if you have a course that is currently In Review in META AND you are now wishing to adjust DE to the course. The purpose of offering this interim document is to fill a gap created during the META DE tab update over the summer. Additionally, with the added likelihood of remote teaching in Spring 2020, this form gives the curriculum that is In Review, the opportunity to still add DE without the extra work of the old DE Tabs & Supplement Form (no longer required since we updated the DE tab in META).
Interim DE Addendum Fall 2020
OTHER DE TIDBITS
- If a course is already designated for any percent of DE, it is covered for emergency situations, but only for the DE percentage identified in META.
- The New DE Tab is designed to document what percentage of DE you think is best for the course to be taught during emergency situations.
- Now that we have experienced so much DE, you may want to update your course to teach DE in general (and emergency situations too), SO, please consider updating your course for DE.
- Courses can be offered immediately after local Curriculum Committee approval instead of waiting for BOT approval.
- PLEASE NOTE: Even though DE can now be implemented after local committee approval, faculty must take the Spring 2021 Schedule Build Timeline into account! Therefore, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that faculty create proposals in META (to add DE and/or update DE for emergency situations) ASAP so they can be approved by the local Curriculum Committee in time to make it into the schedule build. In Spring 2020, CIPD unanimously voted to bring new DE as informational to CIPD AND the Board of Trustees (BOT). (It used to have to be voted on at BOT)

1/23/2020 – ACADEMIC INTEGRITY AND TEACHING COURSES IN A SHORTENED TIMEFRAME
At the 3/22/19 Curriculum Committee meeting, discussion occurred as to the integrity of a course and student learning in 3.0 or more unit course being taught in a shortened timeframe. Below are documents that were used in the discussion–> 2006 State Academic Senate Resolution and 2010 State Academic Statement, the Peralta Course and Approval Handbook which also documents our District Academic Senate’s Resolution regarding Academic Integrity, and minutes from our 3/22/19 committee meeting.
From the committee's discussion, there was consensus that we follow the recommendation of the State Academic Senate and create a separate approval process for curriculum proposals of 3.0+ unit courses that are requested to be offered in a shortened timeframe:
“Resolved, That the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges recommend that when a course of three or more semester or equivalent quarter units is to be offered in a time frame of fewer than six weeks, the local curriculum committee, as part of the curriculum approval process, engage the discipline faculty in a separate review of the course for the following: academic integrity and rigor, the method for meeting Carnegie units, the ability for students to complete and for faculty to evaluate assignments, including those done outside of class, and the appropriateness of the method of delivery, to determine whether the course should be offered in a specific shortened time frame.”

4/22/19 – WHEN COURSES CAN BE OFFERED AS DISTANCE EDUCATION
The Curriculum Committee reviewed campus and district documents in an attempt to clarify when existing courses being updated to add Distance Education as an additional delivery method may be offered. The course may be offered online (or hybrid) AFTER the course update for DE has gone through the approval of the local Curriculum Committee, brought to CIPD as informational, and then approved at the Board of Trustee’s meeting. It is only after the Board of Trustee approval that a new section of the course, offered as DE, may be added to a planning schedule.

C. Distance education proposals are sent to the Council on Instruction, Planning, and Development (CIPD) as informational items that require Board of Trustees approval in order to be implemented in META.”
