ASLC Charge

The Associated Students of Laney College (ASLC) serves as the official voice of the student body, representing student interests and perspectives in shared governance and institutional decision-making.
Section 51023.7 of Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations states that the governing board of a community college district shall provide students with “an opportunity to participate in the formulation and development of district and college policies and procedures that have or will have a significant effect on students.”
 
In addition to its participatory governance role, the ASLC is charged with fostering an inclusive, engaged, and empowered campus community. To fulfill this mission, ASLC will:
  • Hold and sponsor campus events that promote student engagement and connection.
  • Support and collaborate with student clubs and organizations.
  • Sponsor student-centered and student-led ad hoc events, workshops, and open forums.
  • Create opportunities for collaborative, celebratory, and inclusive student engagement that enriches campus culture and promotes belonging.
These responsibilities align with the ASLC Constitution & Bylaws and include participation in policies and procedures related to:
  • Grading policies;
  • Codes of student conduct;
  • Academic disciplinary policies;
  • Curriculum development;
  • Courses or programs that should be initiated or discontinued;
  • Processes for institutional planning and budget development;
  • Standards and policies regarding student preparation and success;
  • Student services planning and development;
  • Student fees within the authority of the district to adopt; and
  • Any other district or college policy, procedure, or related matter that the governing board determines will have a significant effect on students.

ASLC's Roles & Descriptions

President
  • Chairs and calls all ASLC meetings, sets agendas, and serves as the official representative of the student body.
  • Has final authority to assign members to ASLC, shared governance, and district committees.
  • Holds veto power and ensures adherence to the ASLC Constitution and Bylaws.
Vice President
  • Presides over meetings in the President’s absence and assumes the presidency if necessary.
  • Assists with committee operations and supports coordination between branches.
  • Fulfills duties as assigned by the President.
Secretary of External Affairs
  • Maintains records of all external correspondence, bills, and proposals.
  • Prepares and posts meeting agendas at least 72 hours in advance and handles public inquiries related to meetings.
  • Serves as the point of contact for public information requests and agenda submissions.
Secretary of Internal Operations
  • Maintains current contact sheets for ASLC and other Peralta student government members.
  • Oversees internal records, meeting attendance, and posting of official minutes.
  • Organizes and makes governing documents available to the Council.
Treasurer
  • Administers and tracks the ASLC budget, maintaining accurate financial records.
  • Prepares and presents monthly budget reports to the Student Council.
  • Ensures compliance with expenditure and requisition procedures.
 

Student Advocate

  • Serves as the official ASLC liaison to the Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC) 
  • Acts as the ASLC’s voting delegate at all SSCCC assemblies
  • Keeps the Council informed on SSCCC policy changes and initiatives.

Club Affairs Officer

  • Serves as the primary liaison between ASLC and all chartered clubs through the Inter-Club Council (ICC).
  • Oversees ICC meetings, club chartering, renewals, and related events.
  • Ensures club activities comply with ASLC and college policies.

Commissioner of Publicity

  • Manages ASLC communications, publicity, and social media.
  • Creates and distributes event calendars and promotional materials.
  • Supports public outreach and coordination with campus media.

Senators

  • Represent the student body in ASLC meetings and shared governance committees.
  • Participate actively in Council decisions, events, and assigned committees.
  • Fulfill any additional responsibilities assigned by the President.
